Howard Jones Collection of Scenic Designs
Scope and Contents
The collection is composed of materials created and collected by Howard Jones, a long-time scenic design and scene painting faculty member in the School of Design and Production at North Carolina School of the Arts. Jones' scenic designs created for NCSA make up the bulk of the collection, including hand-drawn and digital drafts, finished designs, and painter's elevations. Works created for the Summer Scenes performing art series in Manteo, NC are also included, along with some student work and photographs of his designs and the Design and Production Studio. All productions were held at NCSA unless otherwise noted. Some photographs and designs are not labeled and may have been created by Jones or one of his students.

Biographical Note
Howard C. Jones received a Bachelor of Art and Communication from William Jewell College and pursued graduate studies at Mankato State College (now Minnesota State University, Mankato) before coming to work at the North Carolina School of the Arts. From 1982-1988 Jones served as Resident Scenic Artist and taught courses in scene painting, rendering, drafting, and scene design. Jones left the school in 1988 to co-found Cobalt Studios in White Lake, New York. The studio provides both commissioned work and training programs for scenic artists.
Jones returned to NCSA in 1996, serving as Director of Scenic Art and Scene Painting and as an Associate Professor in the School of Design and Production. In 2001 and 2018, Jones received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence. From 2011-2016 he also served as Assistant Dean of Academics for the School of Design and Production. Jones retired from teaching in 2018.

Abstract

Materials found in collection; there is no documentation concerning the provenance of these materials.
Separated Materials
One poster and one program from Oklahoma! were removed to the Poster Collection (RG-33) and the Program Collection (RG-45).
Processing Information
Decisions regarding arrangement, description, and physical interventions for this collection prior to 2021 are unknown. In 2021 the collection was arranged in chronological order. Creator's file names were used where available; archivist supplied descriptive folder titles where the creator did not include one. Materials were placed in acid-free folders and boxes. Some materials were removed from binding for space and preservation.
