Christina Giannini Collection of Design Drawings

Abstract

The Christina Giannini Collection of Design Drawings consists of design drawings and paintings, primarily costume designs for dance and theatrical stage productions, and also including stage design drawings. Also included in the collection are design notes, stage design scale drwaings, photographs, production posters and programs, and correspondence and paperwork regarding design projects. In addition, the collection includes resumes, portfolios, and awards, as well as material related to Giannini's travels.

Dr. Benjamin F. Ward Collection

Abstract

This collection is comprised of material about and collected by Dr. Benjamin F. Ward. The material documents Ward's piano performances, as well as his academic positions and faculty service, particularly at Duke University. The collection primarily includes correspondence, performance and event programs, newspaper clippings and articles, and ephemera related to Ward's career and volunteer activities. Also included are a number of published books and piano scores collected by Ward; of particular note are six volumes by Maya Angelou, eached inscribed to Ward and signed by the author.

Edward Stierle Collection

Abstract

This collection is comprised of photographs, ephemera, published materials, and newspaper articles dedicated to the career and legacy of Edward “Eddie” Stierle. Materials document his competition wins, enrollment as a high school student at the North Carolina School of the Arts, career with the Joffrey Ballet, and his death from AIDS complications in 1991. Memorial items and other material collected after his death are also included.

Festival Theatre Incorporated Records

Abstract

This collection includes materials produces by Festival Theatre Incorporated, a professional affiliate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. Particularly represented are materials related to their North Carolina Summer Festival, held from 1973-1974. The collection is largely comprised of financial information such as accounting sheets, box office and concession reports, payroll information, and budgets; advertising materials including contracts, radio and television rates, and advertisement proofs; and promotional materials such as posters, brochures, bumper stickers, programs. Correspondence, news clippings, and press releases are also included.

Giorgio Ciompi Papers

Abstract

The Giorgio Ciompi Collection consists of materials related to the International Music Program in Siena, Italy, including correspondence between Ciompi and Siena officials, as well as members of the NCSA Foundation and other financial backers. In addition to correspondence, the collection includes travel and teaching schedules, music programs, brochures of tourist sites, catalogs, notes about student performers, student lists, and faculty contracts.

Julian E. Eubank III Collection

Abstract

The collection includes material produced and collected by Julian E. Eubank III, an NCSA Design and Production student from 1968-1972. Particularly represented are Eubank’s photographic works depicting campus and local scenes, classmates, and school productions. Also included are school publications, newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, academic records, class assignments and notes, set designs, programs, and other ephemera. The collection also contains some material collected by Eubank as an alumnus, especially correspondence and publications from the school, performance calendars, and programs.

Larry Ropp Collection

Abstract

Lawrence A. "Larry" Ropp was the first Director of Costumes at the North Carolina School of the Arts and created costumes for a range of school and local productions in addition to teaching courses in costume history, design, and construction. Ropp's costume designs make up the bulk of this collection and include designs he created as a student at Kenyon College and Carnegie-Mellon University, as an employee at NCSA, and freelance work produced after leaving the school in 1977. Photographs of his work are also included, as are ephemera related to his career including programs, NCSA brochures, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.

M. Patrick Byers Collection

Scope and Contents

This collection is primarily composed of scores and recordings of Byers’ compositions, dating from his first composition in 1959 at age 9, through 2006. Audiovisual materials include four VHS tapes labeled Patrick Byers Residency dated February 2005, and thirty-two audio cassette tapes dated 1982-1997. The collection also includes personal correspondence, photographs, and programs.

The Publications Collection comprises an assortment of informational and creative publications by University of North Carolina School of the Arts students, faculty, and staff. Robert Lindgren and Sonja Tyven Collection

Abstract

This collection is comprised of material created and collected by Robert Lindgren and Sonja Tyven, two of the founding faculty members of the School of Dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts. The two were responsible for the establishment of the Preparatory Dance Program (alternatively called the Pre-Professional Dance Program), and the North Carolina Dance Theatre, now the Charlotte Ballet. Included are newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence photographs, and promotional material from their careers spanning 1965 to 2014.

Rosemary Harris Collection

This collection is comprised of material collected by Rosemary Harris including a large collection of over 300 theatre programs, awards and ephemera from her acting career, information on the Association of Producing Artists and The Kennedy Center Honors Gala, and material documenting the careers of her husbands, actor and producer Ellis Rabb and author and NCSA co-founder John Ehle.

Sandra Williams Collection

Abstract

Sandra 'Sandy' Williams was a student in the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) School of Dance, graduating from the high school program in 1967 and receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970. After graduation, Williams worked for NCSA and the North Carolina Dance Theatre as Ballet Mistress. The collection includes yearbooks, programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and realia from her educational and professional activities.

Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts Records

Abstract

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts is a nonprofit organization established in 1993. Since its establishment, the Institute has funded a variety of local and national programs with the goal of strengthening the arts and supporting arts innovation. In the 2000s, the Institute narrowed its focus to programs directly benefitting UNCSA and its community of students, faculty, and alumni. The bulk of the collection is made up of project files from programs funded by the Institute including project proposals, budgets, progress reports, feedback, and marketing material. Also included are meeting materials, administrative files, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and audiovisual materials.
